Not sure how hard this would be to implement. But I have noticed some problems with the how the admin account is tied to the first collection. If for some reason you delete the collection it caused problems. Here is my proposal.
1. On install a main admin is made with no attachment to any collection. He can add users collections tie them to collections access any database for maitenance(add/delete/edit movies) and can also setup global default preferences.
2. No collection is added on install. Main admin would make the first database and administrator for that database.
3. Users can be attached to multiple databases. Ex: John Doe is admin for collectionA, user for collectionB, nothing for collectionC, admin for collectionD.
This way if the main database needed to be deleted and readded it would be a little easier since there the main admin account is not tied to it or any database.

Rich,
I'm wondering how possible it would be to add a simple rating field to MyDVDs so that people who are browsing a collection can tell how the owner liked each movie.
I was thinking something simple like 1-5 stars, which could be represented by some little gold stars or something.
Thoughts?

This is perfect for my needs and appears to be very well done.
You can certainly call me an idiot, but I cannot figure out how to use it. The install seems to be clean, and -- if I browse the tables, it appears to have worked: created relationships, done picks. No errors in the log.
But I cannot login as anybody but my administrator account. Is there a different url? Are there any user docs that I am missing?

Hi,
I was wondering what you might suggest if I am the coordinator for a list but I forgot my password. I know the coordinator can reset everyone else's but how they find their own? Sorry for the mistake.
i was also wondering if my group is just not doing it right or something but we can't seem to correctly upload/download each other's wishlists from the website. Can you help me?
By the way, the group is Jolly Thoj and the username is Fuzz
Thanks,
Fue

In debugging another issue, I came across a situation where myDVDs would actually blank out the fields of a DVD within the user's collection.
It turns out that I did not put any sanity checking in the update process.
So, here's a patch! It is recommended that everyone apply this to the 2.9.6 default installation. This will be part of 2.9.7.

After nearly two months, I thought it was about time to share all of the updates that have been made in the development release with everyone else out there.
In following with the previous release, additional XHTML 1.0 compliant changes were implemented. The application is nearly XHTML 1.0 Strict compliant (it may very well be already!), but I still have a few more rounds of tests to make in that regard.
This release sees a lot more bugfix and steps taken to clean up the code. It sports a new simplified installer and an easier upgrade script.
READ THE docs/UPGRADING DOCUMENTATION BEFORE UPGRADING. THE PROCEDURE HAS CHANGED!
Some additional effort has been made toward the support of special characters (specifically the apostrophe (')) in collection names, but it remains incomplete. Hence, do NOT use special characters in collection names.
All changes have been comitted to the SVN repository and solidified in the "myDVDs-3.0.6" branch. The "trunk" of the SVN tree will remain as the development branch.
On a whim (primarily since I was re-working the install script), I created a wordpress-stype theme which is based off of the wordpress installation app. I will be tinkering more and more with the themes in future release in order to make them more useful.
Please note: After upgrading, you must go to "Admin"->"Configuration" and make sure that "Default Search Collection" is set. This is a new option, and, while it will look like it is set, it needs to be applied. So, you must hit the submit button at the bottom of the Configuration page to get it to apply.
Full details of all of the changes can be found in the CHANGELOG (http://mydvds.wesmo.com/CHANGELOG) file.
As usual, it can be downloaded in multiple formats:

This bug-fix release cleans up the entire HTML generated code to be fully XHTML 1.0 Transitional compliant. All of the pages have been checked against the w3.org validator and passed which means that, so long as you have a decent browser, things should look the same despite the platform you are on.
Additionally, I made some general code fixes and clean up throughout as I cleaned up the HTML code. A fair amount of progress was made in supporting the use of the apostrophe (') in the name of collections (eg: "Rich's Collection"). All previous versions of myDVDs would break horribly if an apostrophe was used (this is because of the way mySQL uses apostrophes).
Some big news is that the Region1 automatic download, unzip, and install is now functional on Windows! I tested this on a WAMP5 setup using "pkunzip.exe" with the appropriate options (see the help pop-up for the proper arguments for your platform).
All changes have been comitted to the SVN repository and solidified in the "myDVDs-3.0.5" branch. The "trunk" of the SVN tree will remain as the development branch.
As a consequence of the XHTML 1.0 Transitional compliance, a fair bit of effort was put in towards utilizing templates. Now, it is not fully there yet, but, as of now, you can adjust the CSS and the overall layout via the files within the template directory. Future releases will have more of the specific definitions (font style, size, background image, etc) moved in to the template "css.txt" file to allow for more personalized customization.
Full details of all of the changes can be found in the CHANGELOG (http://mydvds.wesmo.com/CHANGELOG) file.

This another bugfix release with fixes throughout various chunks of code. A bit of effort was put in to try and automate the download->unzip->install functionality of the region 1 table for Windows installations but it was not completed (although it is close). My Windows tester had real life drag him away, so I lost his donated services.
In addition to bug fixes, some minor feature enhancements were put in to place (you can now rename a collection, updated error notifications, toggle pop-up windows, etc). Full details can be found in the CHANGELOG (http://mydvds.wesmo.com/CHANGELOG) file.

I have been sitting on this release for a little while now. Real life got in the way every time I started getting heavy in to some of the code.
However, with that aside, this release now has built in Loaning/Borrowing support! It's is not 100% clean, but it is fully functional. This is one of those features that people have been periodically asking about for some time, and, while the interface supported a manual version of managing loans (customize your collection table, and edit each entry as needed), people kept asking for a more straightforward interface. Hopefully, this is it.
There were some other minor code changes throughout, but the main focus of this release was to add the ability to manage dvd loans.

There were a few minor problems in the previous release that needed to be addressed as well as a few design changes.
Most importantly, a bugfix was put in (actually, the code was added back in since it was accidentally removed) to correct a critical problem with the installer which would prevent installations from being successful.
A couple of patches were put in to place to increase the usefulness of the toggling javascript which displays the collection total.
Also, you can now define where the titles of wishlist items get linked off to (this has been a long standing request http://www.wesmo.com/forums/index.php?t=msg&th=58&st art=0&rid=3). This feature is not implemented to the point of the original request, but it will be much easier to do with the changes that were put in to place.
And the last item worthy of mentioning here is a re-work of the admin->configuration page and the contents of some of the elements. In order to make things more modular, and, well, easier to work with, "variables" have been implemented in to the settings.*
* This change has not yet been documented within the on-line help.
For example, the "IMDB Search Link" was "http://www.imdb.com/Tsearch?title=", but it is now "http://www.imdb.com/Tsearch?title=@TITLE@". This functionality has little impact to the user/admin, but, under the covers, it makes things a lot easier. Also, it will make it much easier in future releases to have specific "keyword" variables like "TITLE", "ID", and "UPC" for every setting that requires a URL.
Well, enough rambling. Full details can be found in the CHANGELOG (http://mydvds.wesmo.com/CHANGELOG) file.

After several months of off-and-on-again work, the 3.0.0 release is now available for general consumption.
There are no real user interface (UI) changes that have a great impact upon the usability, so things should work and appear the same.
Why not have a 2.9.12 release, you ask? SO many changes have gone in to this release from the 2.9.11 release; the CHANGELOG is rather large. Also, when looking back to what 2.9.0 looked like, we are at a point where the application has changed rather dramatically.
Something that seems to be a common thread between each of the changes is a fix to the Amazon lookup code. It seems that Amazon likes to change their site a lot, which breaks the screen scraping code each time. Because of that, I have added new Netflix code, reworked the IMDB lookup code, and started down the path of modularizing the lookup code to allow for the easy addition of other sites.
There has been some general cleanup of code and additional enhancements towards a template-based system. This is the only the beginning of "templates" and the hope is to have everything as a template to allow for easy customization and personalization.
One of the nicer changes, IMHO, is the changes to the listing display, and they are somewhat subtle. Of course, there are the "Previous" and "Next" page buttons and the alphabetical navigation bar, but now there is a pull-down (javascript required, sorry!) allowing you to jump to a particular page of results.
Of course, I could go on and on with regards to the changes, fixes, and enhancements, but there is no real point as it is all documented in the CHANGELOG ([url]http://mydvds.wesmo.com/CHANGELOG) file.

While things have been quiet on the development side over the past few months due to Real Life getting in the way, I've come back to the code and performed a lot of cleanup and bug fixing.
However, the bane of my existance seems to be Amazon. Yesterday, I had fixed the code to work with Amazon's search engine (again), and I find out that, today, it no longer works since Amazon updated their site (again) and hence changed their search engine.
Grr..
I expect to have 2.9.12 out shortly, but it may be lacking the full Amazon support.

A number of critical issues were quickly discovered with the 2.9.9 release, so here is 2.9.10 which is a bugfix release of 2.9.9.
All of the problems came about because of an incomplete implementation of the Log settings (Creation date and last update), and the problems varied from complete inability to view a collection to dates not being stored.

2.9.9 is ready to roll. I've been working on it here and there, and finally feel that enough tweaks, fixes, and minor features have been added in and completed to release it.
Among the many little things that got fixed, I finally tracked down the problem with the quality of the thumbnail image generation. It turned out to be a minor fix, but the improvement was noticable on the first image that got generated. If you want the system to re-generate your thumbnails, just execute "rm covers/*/thumb.jpg", and the next time you list your collection, all of the thumbnails will automatically be regenerated (if you have enabled that option).
Additionally, I added in a bunch of checks and debug features to limit or eliminate the massive amount of errors (potentally fatal to a webserver) when performing a global Amazon update.
Perhaps the biggest improvement was a complete rework of the way that the Region1 gets imported. A hint to the solution popped up on the support forum, and, before long, I had a working solution which eliminated the use of a custom function and passed the CSV file right over to the database for processing. The result is that the update to the database happens almost instantly. Any delay now is solely on the side of downloading and unzipping the Region1 file.
A bunch of other changes and fixes were also incorporated, and that list of changes is available in the CHANGELOG (http://mydvds.wesmo.com/CHANGELOG) file.

Real life intruded on my ability to get this out sooner. However, here is 2.9.8, which includes some major code cleanup and optimizations, as well as all patches and bug fixes that have come about since the previous release.
Minor tweaks have been made in a variety of areas, from PDF file generation (now optionally generated in line or as a temporary file to fix some *rare* issues with the Acrobat IE plugin) to fixing the cookie code to re-organizing the Admin menu items to a fix to the regular expression for the Amazon update.
Another key implementation is the ability to update the information of all DVD's in the collection at one time against store data in either the Region1, Amazon, or IMDB tabled (from information already gathered).
The Amazon option has the ability to update all DVD information (as defined in your mapping) based against Amazon's web pages. While this is a nice feature, please use it with caution! For larger collections, it will take a WHILE to grab everything, and your web server may time out. Again, please use it sparingly.
A bunch of other changes and fixes were also incorporated, and that list of changes is available in the CHANGELOG (http://mydvds.wesmo.com/CHANGELOG) file.

This new incarnation of the 2.9 releases contains a number of bug fixes that caused some major annoyances for those that installed the 2.9.6 release. In addition to plugging the holes in the installer and upgrader with regards to the new database entries that were not properly inserted, 2.9.7 squashes a couple of bugs around the new column mapping functionality that was introduced in 2.9.6.
Also, an unused column in the userpref table was elimated, one was renamed, and a new one created. The new one made it very easy to implement separate preferences for wht gets displayed when a user selects to export the results to a PDF. The nice aspect is that you can print only the columns that you want (and that can fit on the page) while not adjusting your web-viewing preferences.
A bunch of other changes and fixes were also incorporated, and that list of changes is available in the CHANGELOG (http://mydvds.wesmo.com/CHANGELOG) file.

It looks like they are trying to help promote the development of Free Software by recognizing projects in a public arena.
All in all, it looks kind of cool.

Not an all out huge release, but I have to keep reminding myself to keep these as incremental releases rather than trying to jam tons of stuff in each one.
2.9.6 sports some layout changes within the Admin menu specifically for handling the new "mapping" feature for mapping columns between data collected off of IMDB or Amazon to the columns in the collection. If enabled, the information gathered from Amazon will automatically update the data stored within the Region 1 table when that entry is added to a collection. Sound complicated? Well, it isn't really. And the beauty is that this configurable for each collection on the system.
Another major change is with regards to cookies. In order to address some of the main complaints around the use of Cookies, they are now optional on a per-login basis. The disadvantage of not using cookies (and relying on PHP sessions only) is that the session only lasts for 3hrs (for a typical web server configuration) or until the web server gets restarted. However, having the option there should eliminate most of the initial start-up problems that people have experienced in the past that have been the result of cookie problems.
The "Requests" button and corresponding page have also been removed and replaced with a pull-down menu.
A bunch of other changes and fixes were also incorporated, and that list of changes is available in the CHANGELOG (http://mydvds.wesmo.com/CHANGELOG) file.
As usual, it can be downloaded in multiple formats:

I was hoping to put a lot more in to this release since some of the features that got added really have a lot more potential than what is being utilized, specifically with data gathered from Amazon or IMDB.
Enough time has passed, and it is time to get this out. The extended functionality planned for IMDB and Amazon will just have to wait until a future release.
The big perk with this release is that, with Amazon support enabled and a valid UPC field (such as one from the Region 1 table), DVD covers and other relevant data are automatically downloaded when a DVD is added to a collection.
Similar restrictions apply to the cover images from Amazon as exist with all other uploaded images to myDVDs. See the LIMITATIONS file for more details.
The upgrade script has the added functionality of backing up the database prior to performing the upgrade. This can be a good thing and a bad thing. Backups are good, yes, but they can take a long time. Please keep this in mind when performing the upgrade. It might be better to perform the backup manually, and then going through the web upgrade without having it do the backup for you.
Another big enhancement is support for encrypted passwords. myDVDs is far from a secure application, but, from the beginning, security has always been considered when coding. However, all passwords were originally saved in etc/conf.php and within the database in plain text. This is no more!
It is worth mentioning, again, to Please Note: Although the code is in there to convert from GIF to JPEG on the fly, this may or may not work depending upon your PHP installation and its GD support. For use with the images, GD 1.0 or greater is required. Image conversion is not guaranteed. If you have problems, try converting the image to JPG format and uploading it separately.
A bunch of other changes and fixes were also incorporated, and that list of changes is available in the CHANGELOG (http://mydvds.wesmo.com/CHANGELOG) file.
