MFind is a perl-script based machine database utility.
Originally written by Ingo Dean at Mentor Graphics Corporation circa
1993, it has been updated and put in a somewhat distributable package
for portablilty purposes.
There are two key interfaces to the machine database: mk.mfind and mfind.
mk.mfind, as its name suggests, builds the machine database. It is where
the real brains lie since it goes out to each of the machines on the
network and gathers as much information about the machine as it can. It
gathers everything from CPU type, model, processor speed, and ram to
swap space, number of partitions, ethernet interfaces, and video cards.
mfind is really a tool to 'view' the machine database. It can accept a
rather large list of queries, including standard regex commands and
wild cards, in order to display specific information. For example, it
makes it rather easy to determine just how many Sun systems with 256MB
of RAM running Solaris 2.6 and an ATI-VideoXpression video card are
on-site.
As it is now, mfind is a working product.. but barely, and the 1.0
version number reflects this. It can identify most platforms and
components, but, for some platforms, it is a bit dated specifically
because I have not had exposure to it.
Because of the complexity of the software and the dynamics involved,
contributions/bug fixes/etc are more than Welcome!
