MFind - The Machine Find Utility ----- When I started working for a company called Mentor Graphics corporation, they had a neat home grown utility running to gather information on all of the configurations of all of the machines within the building. My boss (definitely not the typical pointy-haired boss, but very much so a techie) had written a series of perl scripts to gather all of this information. At the time, it was all perl4 and some shell scripts. Over time, I got to maintining some of the information as well as making updates to it. I, along with a couple of my co-workers, kept trying to get my boss to release the code to the public, but he didn't want to because "It wasn't 100% done yet". Well, as you know, nothing is ever complete, so it was never released. He would always tell us that we could release it if we wanted to support it, but the fear of having to support something that you didn't create kept any of us from following through on that. I eventually left Mentor Graphic Corporation, and, after a few hops, landed at a company with a similar system layout, with a bad need for knowing what they own. MFind sprung to mind. I contacted my old boss, and he happily sent me all of the information necessary. We both knew that it was not really portable code, but I needed to gather the information. After fighting with it for a short period of time (he doesn't write really bad code, IMHO), I understood the program inside and out. I then package-ized it a bit for my own ease of use, and I have dragged it from place to place. All of the real credit goes to my boss back at Mentor Graphics Corporation. Ingo Dean did a terrific job and always kept a step ahead of the user base. I've moved on, and so has he. I just couldn't let this software die. I've taken on the task of updating it and such, but I figured I would put it out there for general consumption.
